Cordis Balloon Catheters Recalled

The Cordis unit was recalled Friday after the Food and Drug Administration determined the product could lead to a heart attack, surgery or death.

The Class 1 recall, the most serious type of recall, affects Cordis' Dura Star RX PTCA and Fire Star RX balloon catheters. The products were manufactured in Mexico from February 2007 to December 2007 and distributed worldwide from March 26, 2007, through Jan. 8, 2008. The FDA issued a notice on its Web site Friday.

'The product has a potential for slow deflation or no deflation of the angioplasty balloon when inserted into the artery or other blood vessels,' This may potentially result in a total blockage of the artery or blood vessels, resulting in a change in the heart rate or heart rhythm, injury to the heart artery, a heart attack, need for a surgical procedure or death.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Glenn Phillips

Doctors Let Skills Slide

While most of the doctors agreed they needed to keep up with changes in the profession and have their competence reviewed, only 31 percent had undergone a competency review in the past three years. Dr. James Thompson, chief executive officer of the Federation of State Medical Boards, said one problem may be that doctors know there is not much that can be done to help doctors who are struggling to be competent.

"There are restrictions on state medical boards that inhibit their ability to go after physicians aggressively," Thompson said. Medical Boards cannot act unless someone reports a problem doctor.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Medical Malpractice and Negligent Care.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Glenn Phillips

Deadly Train Accidents in Washington

Ten years after the first of three traffic fatalities at a Mabton, Washington raidroad crossing, the state is finally installing a crossing gate to protect motorists. The state has approved a $20,000 grant to pay for a crossing gate at the intersections of state routes 241 and 22, this is where three drivers have died starting in 1997. There are warning lights that flash when a train is appriaching, but no gate to prevent motorist from driving over the tracks.

State, county and local governments in Washington are responsible for operating their roads in a safe condition. Railroad crossings are the responsiblity of the government that oversees roads. At this railroad crossing there have been two fatal crashes in the past two years.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Glenn Phillips

1 Killed When Montana Prison Worker Bus Flipped

A bus that was carrying employees for the Montana State Prison to work hit a deer and flipped over on Friday, November 16, killing 1 person and injuring 21. The accident, which occurred at 5:30 a.m., was transporting 26 people and flipped into the median of Interstate 90, 50 miles southwest of Helena.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Rodger Kenney said a front tire of the bus hit the deer and it appeared the driver struggled to control the bus for a time before it overturned. He doesn't expect any charges to be filed.

Ambulances and two helicopters arrived on the scene to take the 21 injured to local hospitals. Many of the passengers had head wounds, broken bones, and minor cuts; two of the victims were said to be in critical condition.

By the afternoon several of the employees were released from the hospital, but 16 remained for further care. The passenger that died in the accident was named Sonja Ryan. The bus driver, Tom McGee, escaped with only a broken leg.

The prison staff not involved in the bus accident stayed beyond their regular shifts to keep all posts covered. The Montana Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Airline, Cruises, Buses, and Other Mass Transit Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Aqua Dots Recalled With Signs Of GHB

Millions of Chinese-made toys for children have been pulled from shelves in North America and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into a powerful date rape drug when ingested. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the Aqua Dots beads. With only seven weeks until Christmas, the recall is yet another blow to toy industry - already bruised by a slew of recalls this past summer.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Glenn Phillips

Womens Legs Almost Cut Off In Accident

A pedestrian's legs were nearly severed when a man crashed into the two parked cars surrounding her Saturday night, police said. A woman who was pinned between both vehicles involved in the crash had her legs nearly severed from the impact. The woman was standing between two parked cars on North Chautauqua Boulevard just before 5:30 p.m. when a pickup truck struck the car behind her. The impact sandwiched Smith between two vehicles and crushed her legs, police said. Police think the driver of the pick up truck that started the accident may have been high on drugs when he veered off the road and struck the parked cars. Authorities have not elaborated on the patients' conditions at the hospital, except to say that Smith's legs were almost cut off in the accident.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Glenn Phillips
